kind of depends on what’s going on for us. sometimes we read a book–something mindless and engaging. also, playing online games that are distracting (www.freerice.com, for instance) or chatting with people online.
not sure whether the original question meant *totally* on our own, or just without our therapist being available. because another thing we often do is call a friend–sometimes, just to have someone to talk to, sometimes for some support in coping.
sometimes we journal or write things down. sometimes we paint or color. sometimes we go for a long walk, or go somewhere public (which tends to calm things down, depending on how crowded the place is!)
sometimes listening to music or an audiobook is really helpful. this is especially true when we have to deal with something that is unavoidable (like riding the subway), because it helps us to stay calm even in a stressful situation.
and sometimes, we just have a meltdown, and it’s ok, and it eventually ends.
